Google is undoubtedly one of the largest internet moguls around. About no one can turn on their computer without at least seeing Google's name appear somewhere. They have branched out into every possible division with great success. About the only way in which they have not been able to have any success is in the social media realm. Orkut was a disaster right from the start. There was virtually no marketing done for the service outside of the requests made to the users of Google to sign up for the service.
With social media sites like Facebook marketing themselves like crazy all over the place, it seemed like a lost cause to gain even a small percentage of the social media market. In fact, Facebook has become so successful at social media and marketing that they too have expanded the services they offer. Partnering with Skype, the social media website is starting to intrude on Google's ground by offering free VoIP phone systems for Skype users.
Much like the way Google Voice works, members of Facebook will be able to speak for free to their friends through their Skype account. While neither service offers VoIP phones at this time, it still seems that Google has the advantage. Their service does not require membership with a separate account. Additionally, the Google Voice service allows you to call any number for free as long as it is within the United States.
Many analysts feel the two hottest websites are Facebook and Twitter. Just watch any commercial and you will likely see one or both of their logos affixed at the bottom of the screen. Companies use these logos to let people know where they can find out more about the company. It is a great tool for companies because when people follow them through either of the services, it allows them to interact and cheaply market to them.
There has been a lot of talk that the only way that Google will be able to remain a growing and viable internet commodity is to buy Twitter. Experts or torn on this issue. While it seems like a great idea to many, others believe it is a misstep which is not necessary for the success of Google. The advantage it will give Google is 160 million users which will be accessible for marketing to whenever Google has a new rollout.
Another reason why the buyout is considered to be a good idea for Google is because it allows the business to continue to grow. With an IPO imminent for Twitter, the company stands to make a lot of money. It can also cement the place at the top of the list for the most used site on the internet as Google currently holds the title.
Whether or not Google will buy out Twitter has yet to be determined. It stands to be a good marketing move for Google even if it does mean venturing back into a service which Google has failed at.
